Updates from the East. – Japanese Organic standard progress-

Japan Agriculture Standard (JAS) Organic is one of the oldest national standards in the world. It was implemented in 1999 and has been updated since.

For many years the scope of JAS Organic was limited to agricultural produce and products such as vegetables, fruits, and other crops. Also processed foods and beverages, but not those of livestock origin or alcoholic beverages. The standard for organic livestock was published in 2005; however, third party certification and labelling as Organic JAS was not mandatory until July 2020.

JAS has been revised at least every 5 years; therefore, it has been changing in various ways.

From April 1st, 2023, Alcoholic beverages came under the scope of JAS Organic certification, so can now be labelled as Organic. Currently there is a transition period until Sep 30th, 2025. Until then there can be:
