Robin Fransella reports for TOS on the content of four of the Congress Sessions dealing with regulatory issues, as he feels that some of the points raised there will be of interest to readers who may not have had the opportunity to attend themselves.
This first article covers the session that discussed the EU Regulation. In future TOS issues the other Biofach sessions on regulatory issues relating to: packaging, deforestation and how to combat fraud in the EU and US Regulations will be reported too.
EU regulation updates
The “new” Organic Regulation in the European Union was examined in the regular IFOAM session, which looked at its challenges and opportunities, moderated by Lea Bauer, Regulation Consultant with IFOAM Organics Europe, who noted that the move to compliance rather than equivalence for international trade is the next challenge to be addressed.
Elena Panichi, Head of the European Commission’s Organic Unit spoke on recent activities and future plans. Mme Panichi noted that the move to increase the European organic land area to 25% of agricultural land has put organic at the forefront of thinking in the debate on the Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy. Considerable time has been spent on ensuring that these aims are included in all considerations for agricultural initiatives.
