Protecting organic integrity following EU legislation: The point on the horizon

In TOS No 186, published a year ago, we talked of: “Environmental labels in the EU: reinventing the well?” about the new labels and new ways to measure environmental sustainability and other associated concepts that the EU is promoting nowadays within its European Green Deal policy. We pointed out that, although a true concern about environmental issues from institutions and businesses is positive, a proliferation of too simplified concepts and logos could be detrimental for the consolidated concept of organic production and its logo. And in the end, it could result in greenwashing practices, which is what the EU Commission wants to fight against.

One of new technologies to assess green labels mentioned in that article was Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), the decision of the EU Commission on the application of this technology has been postponed because its incapacity to measure the complexity of agri-food systems was proven (for example: caged hens eggs got a higher score than free-range eggs, and those higher than organic eggs).
